Hon. Justice Owiny-Dollo (DCJ) addressing participants at the TAT workshop
A two-day training workshop for Judges and members of the newly sworn-in Tax Appeals Tribunal (TAT) has been organized under the theme: "Current Developments in Tax Law Practice and Administration."
Uganda Revenue Authority is conducting the event in conjunction with the Judicial Training Institute. It is partly intended to provide a platform for exchange of experiences and best practices in the field of taxation.
The Deputy Chief Justice, Hon. Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo officially opened the Workshop at Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort & Spa,off the Entebbe Express Highway on Thursday 2, 2018.
The DCJ said to achieve the ends of justice requires having in place well established laws, rules and principles that govern taxation in Uganda.
"These laws, rules and principles are firmly rooted in the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, the Tax Statutes, other applicable laws, and common law," he said.
He said the role of the courts is to contribute to the realization of tax compliance through development to tax jurisprudence and sanctioning of tax evaders, while also having the insight to detect aggressive tax planning bordering on evasion.
The Deputy Chief Justice said although judges are expected to be knowledgeable on every subject, not all are well-grounded on issues of taxation and the tax system.
The Executive Director of the Judicial Training Institute, Hon. Justice Dr Henry Peter Adonyo, said there is need for key stakeholders in the taxation sector to understand the role of Uganda's tax system and the role it plays in economic development.
The training drew participants from High Court Divisions and Circuits, including the Commercial, Civil, Execution the Anti-Corruption Divisions of the High Court; the High Court Circuits of Gulu, Mbarara, Masaka and Kabale, among others.
